How does neurofeedback work?

Sensors are applied to the client’s scalp to listen in on brainwave activity. This information is sent to a computer which turns it into feedback for the brain. The computer essentially gives the client’s brain control over a video monitor, audio speakers and a vibrating stuffed animal that sits in the client’s lap. As the brain shifts its own behavior, the video, audio and tactile feedback shifts and changes throughout the session.

Through this process the client’s brain gets continual practice at shifting and regulating itself. This automatic and effortless activity “shapes” the brain’s behavior toward more desirable, more regulated performance. The specific locations on the scalp where we listen in on the brain, are chosen based on the symptoms the client reports. Each training program is customized to the need of the client.

At no time is there any electrical stimulation given to the brain. The brain is simply taught to behave in a more regulated manner. Just like a muscle learns via repetitious training, the brain can also learn through real-time feedback and instantaneous practice and reinforcement.

What is neurofeedback-assisted counseling?

Neurofeedback therapy, or neurofeedback-assisted counseling, combines innovative neurofeedback training (see below) with classic counseling techniques. Clients get the best of both worlds in each session. Clients talk through their concerns, seek out workable solutions to their challenges and develop concrete action plans. Simultaneously, clients are receiving the brain exercise that will help their brains perform more optimally. The combined effect of brain training and talk therapy provides clients with the extra tools they need to reach their goals.
